Something conservative, but a WIP nonetheless!
Well, I was getting bored with the shrug/shawl thing that I was making, and realized after my parents’ visit that with my dad’s birthday in May, I haven’t knit him anything yet since I starting this adventure called knitting. So, I tried to think of something that would be significant, something that he could wear in the summer or fall, something not too heavyweight, and something that I could finish by his birthday, or at the latest, by Father’s Day. I scoured my files and books, and finally came up with a pattern that didn’t seem like it would be too bad. Naturally, time will tell!
I decided on a vest that was in the magazine, Creative Knitting, back about 2 years ago that could be made either in solid or with stripes. Of course, I have to be difficult on myself and do it with the stripes. The original was done in a buttercream yellow base with colonial blue stripes. Not me, not my dad. At the same time, I wanted to do something that might put a big dent in my stash. (I have to justify being able to buy stuf at the MDSW in a few weeks, after all!) So, I found a yarn that I had originally intended for something for JC, found another yarn of the same brand and type in a color that coordinated just fine with it, and voila! Vest project is underway.
And just to show that I have been busily working on it (I think I’m making more progress on this instead of my shrug because it’s an easier pattern thusfar), here’s proof:
Just in case you can’t tell clearly, the main color is Caron’s Simply Soft in Dark Sage, and the contrast/stripe color is Caron’s Simply Soft in Dark Country Blue. Pretty conservative, but a big improvement over the yellow/blue colors used in the original pattern, and I think my dad will like it better. And heck, if he wore vests and/or v-necks (as this will be), JC said he liked the colors too, so I think it met his guy point of view approval. ![]()
