Mmmm. Yarn.

So I spent >$50 in yarn for the second time in two weeks. I’m so into browns, tans and greens right now that I’m trying to shift my stash that way. But what’s funny about this is that I realized I have become a much more discerning consumer when it comes to knitting. We were at the Capital Home Show on Saturday and I took the opportunity to stop by Capital Yarns. I haven’t stopped by there since early 2005 when I was still a newish knitter, and it’s funny, the bag I knit from the Addi Turbos I picked up there was the first project I did in the round and using complicated YO/SSO techniques. It’s also sitting right next to me, because I use it to hold extra grocery bags to use as trash bags here in the craft room/office.

Anyway. I realized, while I was there making the rounds, that they have the best yarn selection of any of the LYSes I’ve been to. Gorgeous stuff. Even some summer-weight gauge stuff that isn’t in pastels, which is a godsend to autumns like me. They have some really beautiful alpaca that I’m going to have to go back and get some of, but I was on a quest for nifty handbag yarns, and came away with a norwegian cotton/viscose/silk mix in a light jade for one and some cascade 220 in brown and crystal palace fizz in tan for the other.

Meanwhile, I’m knitting a camisole out of a caron’s simply soft and it’s making me realize that good yarns are so worth it, because cheap yarns are… cheap yarns. Fortunately, I see many granny squares in my future, since I have finally figured out single crochet. Good thing, too, since i need to put crochet borders on most of the tank tops I work on.

  1. I’ve decided that you’re so right - cheap yarn just isn’t worth it. Every time I try to work with it I’m frustrated, and that’s contrary to why I started knitting in the first place!
