cold weather-more knitting
Helen here– Seems like the more we get into Fall, the more I want to knit. I’ve decided, because I’m insane, to try my hand at a fisherman’s aran sweater. It’s not the whole deal, but I am knitting panels with off-white merino. My mom knitted one for my dad back in the day and I appropriated it and wore it for years. Dad stole it back while I was in college and it actually got eaten by moths, cats, and other sundry critters.
If I do okay with this pattern–one with lots of kbls, tw2ls and similar hoops, I’ll feel like I’m ready for the next step: a true fisherman’s sweater, with a wide range of panels.
I love pattern knitting. I probably like color knitting a lot too, but I haven’t done as much of it. While flat knitting is better for knitting-while-doing-other-things, I love watching patterns emerge and then learning to follow them by sight. And I love knitting with natural fibers. I love the feel of cotton and wool. I especially love it when the wool has been imperfectly spun, and you see a blob of the real deal. This makes for a less perfectly knitted sweater, but isn’t that partly the point?
Mom sent me a $50 gc to Michael’s for my birthday. While I really can’t wait to start knitting with the gorgeous yarns I can get at LYSes, having an aran to play with will keep that side of me more than amused. ![]()

Boy, you are ambitious lately! Have you thought of even just getting the Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool at Michael’s? It’s still real wool, and it’s natural colored for such aran type sweaters. Just a thought.
I’ve seen it, but it’s hard to get 10 skeins of anything in the same dye lot on a whim, apparently. But Patons was on sale anyhow, and I love the way it feels!
Patons is a good choice too! Forgot about them, and that they were at Michael’s now.
