Figured it out
I finally figured out how to do the cable on the tank top sweater I’m working on. Hooray! I’ll tell you the trick– it was….READING THE DIRECTIONS MORE CAREFULLY. duh. Once I did that (and paid better attention to what I was doing), then it gelled and started to come together. However, seeing earlier errors and places where my stitches were too loose in areas that WEREN’T the cable itself, I decided that it looked too sloppy to think that I could pass off the mistakes (sometimes you can with something, sometimes you can’t. This one you couldn’t), so I just ripped out the whole thing and am starting over. It’s not too much of a tragedy, only about 22 rows of 70 stitches each. That’s not too bad. After doing that baby blanket for my nephew Jack (yes, he finally has a name), anything else seems small in comparison.
However, I did also realize that I need a better cable needle. I thought that if you got one cable needle (I have one of those standard skinny metal wing style ones from Boye), that it was like one-size-fits-all. Nay, I’ve discovered, not true. So, I want to see if I can find the wooden notched ones at the LYSs here if I can. I know they don’t have it at Michael’s, so I’ll check Glenmarle and Pins & Needles, maybe even Wooly Lamb or that other place in Pennington before trying to order it. There’s the Brittany brand of wood cable needles, which are cheaper, but they don’t have the notches. The notched ones are twice the price, but I think they’d probably be worth it.
So progress has been made! I feel a little better about the cable for this sweater, and don’t feel bad about frogging it. It will look much better once I get the right tool to help. Hooray!
Update: No luck at Glenmarle or P&N (Glenmarle was *GASP* closed on a Sunday, and P&N didn’t have the wooden ones). So I ended up buying a set from Knitpicks, along with some discount sock yarn. Not like I’ve worked on any socks for a while. I hope it comes in this week!
