That was a close one!

This story is cross-posted in a longer entry on my LJ Journal (Windsornot), but I felt it was worth repeating here.

Miriam’s baby shower was last weekend. I finally had completed all the things for baby Penelope, and took photos (which I’ll have to post on here at some point) and was really hoping that she’d like the clothes and blanket that I made her. I hinted to Miriam that my gift had been a project, but nothing more. My gift was one of the last ones to be opened. In the meantime, Lorena’s mother in law, Charo, has given to Miriam, among some other gifts, a handknit blanket that Charo’s neighbor had done. While I didn’t like the pattern itself, my heart absolutely sank when I saw it, because technique-wise, it was flawless, and God knows my stuff looked okay but was full of flaws. I was ready to cry on the spot, but held it in so I wouldn’t have embarassed myself. Miriam finally opened mine, and I just reminded her that this was my project, and she saw everything, and exclaimed, “You made all of this yourself?” and I said yes. Iris, my mother in law, was a witness to that, and she was there to support my claim. They were all amazed at the items, and they didn’t see the flaws in them, and were amazed that I even had the “talent” or skill to do that. I explained that it was still a new hobby of mine. But the parents-to-be were both thrilled with the gift, and made sure to tell me that they were certainly heirloom type items to them if nothing else. That really pleased me. On the way home, Iris told me later that from the buzz she was hearing (which in some cases she would’ve heard more as most of the people there spoke Spanish, and that’s her native language after all) was that my present really had rave reviews and that most people were considering my present to be the best one of all and that they were all so impressed and didn’t know I had it in me! I’ve been encouraging Iris to try knitting for a while, since she’s the crafty type, and after seeing what I did, she is now asking me to teach her, because she wants to make stuff like that too. (And most of my stuff was Debbie Bliss’ Baby Knits for Beginners stuff, so it was fairly plain and simple.) So that was encouraging too.
