Man, I really need to learn to gauge better

I am making good progress now with the baby bunting for Drew’s teacher. I have followed the directions…sort of…for most of the pattern. I’ve had to adapt a little along the way because the latest part of the project– the sleeves– have ended up being about twice as wide, if not wider, than they should be. However, the one consistent part of the whole thing is that while everything is way too wide, the length is right. I’ve completed one sleeve and have started the second one. I might finish that tonight. If not, then tomorrow for sure. Then I need to create the hood, which I think I will be adapting a little again. Oh, I hope in the end Mrs. Gill appreciates what I’ve tried to make for her. If nothing else, it’ll be a great blanket type cover thing for the baby to wear while outside. JC suggested that I try to shrink it a little. It’s mostly acrylic, so it’s unlikely that I can do that. However, the care instructions say not to wash in water hotter than 104 degrees, so maybe if I put it in boiling water, it’ll either melt, kinda felt, or do not much of anything. It’s worth a try!

At least I think I’ll be able to keep to my self imposed deadline of the end of this week!

  1. hmmm, still sounds like you might need to go down a needle size or two. Do you swatch? Sounds like you are on the loose side, too; I’ll watch my own stitching to see if I can help you troubleshoot this.

  2. Yeah, that’s the scary thing. I did make a swatch. I’m sure the stitches aren’t too loose. I think I just misjudged it, period. Kinda hard with this homespun stuff. At this point, it doesn’t bother me. I agree that probably I needed to go down a few needle sizes, but didn’t have all the needles to do it correctly. It’s still fine. The length is what it should be, but everything will be a little wide. I am going to make an adjustment with the hood, since I don’t want the kid to drown in his/her hood! It will definitely be a blanket bunting in the end!
