And she’s off!

Been sort of in a slump aside from cranking out the base of this handbag while on the subway last weekend. The result was a slightly unevenly knit octagon that looked like a big, floppy, pink stop sign. It stayed this way for a week while I hunted down a circular of the right size to finish the bag. I knew I’d need to go to a LYS to find it, but I hadn’t figured out where the LYSes in my area were since the move. One thing I’ve noticed, and am generally very annoyed by, is that most LYSes are open one weeknight a week, and I don’t keep track of which one it is so well. Imagine my delight when I discovered Capital Yarns in Chantilly, which is open til 7 every night but Sunday!!

So I came home with my tiny size 5 24″ circular and picked up the stitches around the edge of the octagon. It looked messy, but I persevered. It was not that I was one round into the St. Johns Wort–yes, I was knitting in the round!–that I realized there was a major typo in the pattern where it describes the stitches. Sure enough, when I looked the pattern up at Knitting Fool, there was an extra comma in the printed pattern that was causing me to knit multiples of 8 instead of 6. (Why it took me a full round of this to figure that out may be related to my very uneven performance in mathmatics throughout the years.)

So I frogged back to the stop sign, and picked up the stitches more carefully this time. Much better. I may get a bag out of this yet.
