My first kid sweater– DONE!

I finished the sweater I started for Drew last week. After seeing my semi-botched sleeveless turtleneck sweater, he asked me to make him a sweater. Found what seemed like an easy pattern on the Lion Brand website. Well, overall, the sweater came out fine. It was a little short in the body, but it came out right in the end. The sleeves are where I had problems. The pattern is not written correctly, and even with me making adjustments, such as learning to M1 correctly by the second sleeve, the sleeves still ended up being WAY too long and a little snug. Even after rolling up the cuffs, the sleeves were still too long. I also made a mistake (this was partially knitter’s error) with the beginning of the hood. After a little bit, Drew said he didn’t want a hood. But between the mistake rows and the corrected rows, and how far along it was, I was able to just bind off and make a collar with it. So other than the sleeves being too long, it doesn’t look too bad for a first full-fledged sweater with the sleeves and all. It’s also fortunate that this is bulky yarn, and it’s a multi-colored yarn too, so that ends up forgiving some of the mistakes here and there. Drew loves his sweater nonetheless, which makes me happy. Both JC and I told him that just like Spongebob’s grandma’s sweaters, there’s love in every stitch.

Of course, as soon as we had the sweater on and told him that, Drew promptly remember, “Mom, will you make me my rainbow hat now?” LOL We had bought more multicolored yarn (regular gauge) that he really wanted, and I told him that I wouldn’t make a sweater, but I’d make a hat with it, and he remembered. That kid is getting good. I’ll find an easy hat pattern, I think in the Hip to Knit book, and make that. Maybe I’ll try another sweater for him at some point soon, but not yet. I want to get back to the boucle yarn hoodie that I’m trying to make for myself!

And my new Denise Needles came in handy today, as the stitches to pick up the hood were a little too tight to put on my straight needles, so I was able to make a circular one with the DIN, and voila! I also got a gift certificate from B&N as a gift from my guys, and so I ordered the Yarn Girls Kid Knits book, which I’m looking forward to getting. I think I’ll be concentrating on kids and baby knits for a while, since we have a cousin expecting a baby and a whole lot of little kids in the family, including Drew.
